How California Conservatorships Are Established

A conservatorship is a California court proceeding in which a judge appoints a conservator to care for a person who can no longer manage their own care or finances. A conservator of the person handles day-to-day needs like food, housing, and health care. A conservator of the estate manages that person’s financial affairs. General conservatorships typically apply to elderly adults or those with serious illness or injury; limited conservatorships are designed for adults with developmental disabilities.

Establishing a conservatorship requires filing a petition, presenting evidence of incapacity, and attending a hearing before a judge. In Los Angeles County, these matters are centralized at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles, regardless of where the conservatee lives.
